At the performance
First time at the opera? These are the questions we hear most. There is no wrong way to spend an evening with us.
What should I wear?
The performance time directly affects formality. There are no strict dress codes, meaning comfort is key, but dressing up can make the experience feel special. Evening performances tend to invite a more elevated look.
We suggest smart-casual attire to cocktail attire, but please never let your wardrobe keep you from a performance. Please avoid strong scents, as they may distract others. Halls often run cool, so a light layer is a good idea.
How long is the performance?
- Madama Butterfly runs 2 hours and 50 minutes, including one interval.
- Gianni Schicchi Act I, The Will, runs 55 minutes, and Act II, The Wake, runs about 1 hour, with a 15-minute intermission between the two acts.
Is the opera sung in English?
When should I arrive?
May I bring children?
I have never been to an opera. What should I expect?
ACCESSIBILITY: What if I need accessible seating or an assistive listening device?
Act 1 is The Will, staged. Act 2 is The Wake, where the family moves into the room with you, with food, drink and more music. Here is what that means for your evening.
Is there assigned seating during The Wake?
Are food and drink included in my ticket?
How long is the full evening?
May I leave after Act 1?
