Noted for his “beautiful, well-produced, rich sound…,” Chancelor Barbaree, baritone, calls Amarillo, TX, home. In his 2024-2025 season, Chancelor will join Vero Beach Opera as Doctor Grenvil in La Traviata and will sing Manfred Lewin in Jake Heggie’s For a Look or a Touch with Bold City Opera. He will also sing Melchior in a concert version of Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors in Alabama as well as holiday performances with Gulfshore Opera. He will also perform the titular role in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi this spring. This past summer, Chancelor joined Opera NEO in their production of Così fan Tutte as Don Alfonso, where he was praised for his “suave vocal technique” (San Diego Story), and he was a Gerdine Young Artist with the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis in the summer of 2023. In past seasons, Chancelor has sung Marco in Gianni Schicchi, Marullo in Rigoletto, and Fiorello in The Barber of Seville, all with Amarillo Opera. In concert, Chancelor has been featured as the baritone soloist in Handel’s Messiah, a featured soloist with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, and performed Vaughan Williams’s Five Mystical Songs with the Oklahoma Master Chorale.
In competition, he was awarded First Prize in the MIOpera International Vocal Competition university division in 2023, an encouragement award for the Opera Index Vocal Competition in 2023, and the Blitzstein award for the Orpheus Vocal Competition in 2022. He was an alternate finalist in the 2022 Carolyn Bailey & Dominick Argento Vocal Competition in 2022 and a semifinalist in the Rochester International Vocal Competition in 2022 and 2023.
